The High School has made a distinguished contribution to the development of rugby football in Ireland since its foundation in 1870.  The first recorded match against another school was played in 1876; by 1877 the 1st and 2nd XVs were playing a full season of fixtures against a wide range of opposition.  The High School participated in the first match of the Leinster Schools Cup competition in 1887.  It succeeded in progressing to the final round in 1897, 1898, 1915, and 1963 before defeating Belvedere College to win the Leinster Senior Cup in 1973.  In 2024, The High School won the Leinster Metropolitan Girl's Schools Senior Cup.  It also contested the final rounds of the Leinster Rugby Schools Vinnie Murray Senior Plate and Cup competitions in 2023 and 2024, respectively.  The High School Junior Cup Team defeated Newbridge College to win the Leinster Junior Cup in 1938.  It also won the Leinster Girls Schools Junior Cup in 2023 as well as the Leinster Metropolitan Girl's Schools Junior Cup in both 2023 and 2024.
